15 minSkip the microwave and toast your tortillas the traditional Mexican way, directly over the flame.
In just 10-20 seconds per side, your whole wheat tortillas will develop those coveted charred spots and puff up with steam like magic.
The result? Warm, pliable tortillas with a subtle smokiness that absolutely demolishes the sad, rubbery microwave version.
Brush with butter or leave plain, then stack in a towel-lined basket to keep them hot and soft.
Chef Tips
- Watch constantly (tortillas go from perfectly charred to burnt in seconds)
- A perfect tortilla will puff up completely if it has no tears or holes
- No gas stove? Use an electric burner with a wire cooling rack set over it
- Keep finished tortillas wrapped in a clean kitchen towel to maintain heat and moisture
- This method works for corn tortillas too, just reduce the time slightly

Directions
Place a tortilla directly over a medium high gas flame, or place on a cookie rack set over an electric burner.
Toast until surface becomes lightly flecked with char, about 10 to 20 seconds, and tortilla begins to fill with steam.
Turn over and toast the other side.
A perfect tortilla will fill with steam and puff up if it has no tears or holes.
If desired, brush tortilla with oil or butter.
Place in a towel-lined basket while toasting the remaining pieces.
Serve piping hot.
