2 hrsThese little snowballs with a sparkle are built for the holiday cookie tin.
A vanilla baking bar melted right into the dough gives these crinkles a buttery sweetness that goes way beyond your typical sugar cookie.
Buttermilk keeps the crumb soft and tender, and the dough chills for an hour so it’s easy to roll into neat little balls.
Then each one takes a tumble through a mix of granulated and red decorating sugar before hitting the oven, so they come out with that classic crackled top and a festive shimmer.
They bake fast, cool fast, and disappear even faster.
Kitchen Tips
- Melt the vanilla baking bar low and slow, stirring the whole time. It can scorch and turn lumpy in a hurry.
- Don’t skip the chill time. Warm dough won’t hold its shape and the cookies will spread flat.
- Roll the balls generously in the sugar mixture. That thick coating is what gives you the signature crinkle cracks as they bake.
- Pull them when the bottoms are just lightly golden. The centers should still look slightly soft and they’ll firm up as they cool.
