2 hrsThe polka dots here are candy-coated M&M’s pressed into a peanut butter base while it’s still warm, so they lock in place as the bars set. No oven, no baking, just a saucepan and a little patience.
Peanut butter and vanilla candy coating melt together over low heat into a smooth, glossy binder. Keep the heat gentle: candy coating scorches and seizes if it gets too hot, turning grainy instead of pourable.
Crisp rice cereal brings the snap, while chopped peanuts double down on the roasted, salty crunch. Press the mixture firmly into the pan so the bars hold together cleanly when you slice them.
Scatter the M&M’s right away and press lightly, otherwise they won’t stick to a cooled surface. Let everything firm up at room temperature before cutting.
Kitchen Tips
- Melt the coating low and slow; high heat makes it seize into a grainy mess.
- Press the base hard into the pan so the bars don’t crumble when cut.
- Add the M&M’s while the surface is still tacky so they anchor in place.
- Store in a tightly covered container at room temperature to keep the cereal crisp.
Variations
- Swap the peanuts for chopped pretzels for a sweet-salty crunch.
- Use chocolate candy coating instead of vanilla for a richer base.
- Stir in mini marshmallows for a rocky-road feel.
