Five ingredients and you’ve got a dip that straddles the line between savory and sweet. Cream cheese and sour cream whipped together with dried ginger, fresh orange juice, and orange zest create something creamy, citrusy, and warmly spiced. It’s the kind of dip that works equally well with fruit, grilled chicken, or cubes of pound cake.

Beat the ginger into the softened cream cheese first, before adding anything else. Dried ginger can clump if you toss it into a wet mixture, but blending it directly into the cream cheese distributes it evenly and brings out more of its warm, peppery bite.

The sour cream loosens the texture from a stiff spread to a smooth, scoopable dip. Without it, the cream cheese base would be too thick to dip into. Orange juice thins it a touch further and brings the citrus flavor, while the zest adds fragrant oils that you can smell before you even taste it.

Chill before serving. The flavors sharpen as it sits, and the dip firms up to a better dipping consistency. An hour in the fridge is ideal.

Apricots (fresh or dried), chicken skewers, and cubed pound cake are the suggested dippers, and they’re spot-on. The ginger and orange play off the sweetness of fruit and cake, and the tanginess from the sour cream complements savory chicken.

Kitchen Tips

  • Soften the cream cheese fully before beating. Cold cream cheese stays lumpy no matter how hard you mix.
  • Use freshly squeezed orange juice for the brightest flavor. Carton OJ works but tastes flatter.
  • Start with 1 ½ teaspoons of dried ginger and taste. Add more if you want a stronger ginger kick.

Variations

  • Honey-ginger dip: Stir in a tablespoon of honey for a sweeter version that leans more toward dessert.
  • Fresh ginger upgrade: Replace dried ginger with 1 teaspoon of finely grated fresh ginger for a sharper, more vibrant heat.
