10 minThree fruits, ice, and a teaspoon of honey. That’s all it takes for a thick, naturally sweet fruit smoothie that tastes like a tropical sunrise. Bananas, strawberries, and fresh pineapple do all the work here, and there’s no milk, yogurt, or juice needed.
The banana gives this shake its creamy, milkshake-like body without any dairy. Two full cups of sliced banana means the texture is thick and spoonable rather than watery. The pineapple adds tartness that keeps it from tasting like pure sugar, and the strawberries bring that bright berry flavor that ties everything together.
Only a teaspoon of honey goes in, because ripe fruit provides more than enough sweetness on its own. Taste before blending and skip the honey entirely if your bananas have plenty of brown spots.
Serve this immediately. Banana-based smoothies oxidize fast and turn brown within 20 minutes. They still taste fine, but the color goes from gorgeous pink to muddy beige.
Chef Tips
- Freeze the banana slices ahead of time for an even thicker, colder shake without extra ice
- Use ripe, fragrant fruit for the best natural sweetness
- Blend on high for a full minute to break down the pineapple fibers completely
Variations
- Add a handful of fresh mango for an even more tropical blend
- Toss in a tablespoon of chia seeds and let it sit for 5 minutes for a thicker, more filling shake
- Swap strawberries for blueberries or mixed berries
