A Retro Party Appetizer With Real Charm

These little wieners in orange sauce are the cocktail-party throwback that’s never gone out of style. Bite-size hot dogs simmer in a sweet-tangy citrus glaze spiced with whole cloves and cinnamon. The result is something between sweet-and-sour and a holiday spiced wine, glossing each piece in a glossy lacquer that begs for toothpicks.

The technique is a classic cornstarch slurry. Cornstarch dispersed in cold orange juice with sugar thickens as it heats, and the secret is keeping the heat low. High heat scorches the sugar and gives the cornstarch a chalky aftertaste, while a low slow thicken gives a clear, glossy sauce.

Whole cloves provide deep aromatic warmth without breaking apart and turning the sauce gritty the way ground cloves would. Vinegar cuts the sweetness with bright acidity, balancing what could otherwise be a cloyingly sweet glaze.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use a high-quality hot dog or smoked cocktail wieners. Cheap dogs taste flat under sweet sauces.
  • Cut the dogs into 1-inch pieces. Smaller bites get lost; larger ones don’t pick up enough sauce coating.
  • Stir constantly while the sauce thickens. Cornstarch settles fast and forms gooey lumps if you walk away.
  • Strain out the whole cloves before serving if you don’t want guests biting into them.
  • Make ahead and reheat gently. The sauce flavors deepen as they sit, and a quick warm-up over low heat brings everything back.

Variations

  • Substitute pineapple juice for half the orange juice for a sweet-and-sour twist.
  • Use mini smoked sausages or kielbasa pieces in place of hot dogs for richer flavor.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce for an Asian-leaning sweet-savory glaze.
