The marinade does all the heavy lifting: salty soy meets sweet maple syrup for that classic teriyaki vibe, while pineapple chunks add tropical sweetness and help tenderize the meat. Green peppers bring a fresh crunch that balances the richness of sirloin.
The microwave technique is genius for weeknights or apartment dwellers without outdoor space. You get tender beef without firing up the grill, and the covered cooking method keeps everything moist. Just remember to rotate the dish halfway through for even cooking.
Chef Tips
- Cut uniform cubes: Keep your sirloin pieces the same size (about 1 inch) so they cook evenly in the microwave
- Don’t skip the marinade: That hour of marinating isn’t just for flavor. The acid from the pineapple juice helps tenderize tougher cuts.
- Use the right skewers: Wooden or plastic skewers work best for microwave cooking (no metal!)
- Brush between cooking: Applying marinade after the first 4 minutes builds up layers of glaze and flavor
Variations
- Grill option: Thread onto metal skewers and grill over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes, turning once
- Teriyaki style: Add 1 tablespoon grated ginger and 2 cloves minced garlic to the marinade for extra punch
- Veggie swap: Try red onion wedges, cherry tomatoes, or mushrooms instead of green peppers
