These oatmeal cookies on sticks are part baking project, part craft activity. The base is a solid butter and oat cookie that’s sturdy enough to hold up on a wooden skewer, and the decorating is where kids can really go wild: frosting faces, chocolate sprinkle hair, gumdrop eyes, noses, and mouths.

The dough benefits from an hour in the fridge before shaping. Chilling firms up the butter so the balls hold their shape and flatten evenly when pressed with a sugar-dipped glass. The wooden sticks get inserted before baking so they’re locked in as the cookies set.

Once cooled, frost with a basic confectioners’ sugar icing and let the decorating begin. Stand the finished cookie pops upright in large gumdrops as a base so they display like little edible puppets.

Pro Tips

  • Dip the glass bottom in sugar before each press. It prevents sticking and adds a sparkly sugar crust to the top.
  • Insert the sticks halfway into each flattened ball before baking. Push too far and they poke through the top.
  • Let the frosting set completely before standing the cookies upright. Soft frosting smears on contact.

Variations

  • Use chocolate frosting instead of white for a different face color and flavor.
  • Add food coloring to the icing for brighter, more colorful faces.
  • Skip the face decorations and drizzle with melted chocolate and sprinkles for a simpler cookie pop version.
