10 minA cheese ball is the ultimate low-effort, high-impact party appetizer. This one blends cream cheese with sharp cheddar and finely chopped smoked ham, seasoned with onion powder, then rolled in chopped nuts for a crunchy coating that shatters with every bite.
Getting the cream cheese to room temperature before mixing is the one step you can’t skip. Cold cream cheese won’t blend smoothly with the cheddar, and you’ll end up with a lumpy ball that falls apart on the serving plate. Leave it out for at least 30 minutes, or until it’s soft enough to stir easily.
Sprinkling some of the onion powder directly on the sliced ham before chopping it is a small detail that distributes the seasoning more evenly. Instead of concentrated pockets of onion flavor, every bite has a consistent savory hit alongside the smoky ham and sharp cheese.
The nut coating isn’t just for looks. Blending or finely chopping the nuts and pressing them into the surface creates a textured shell that makes the cheese ball easy to pick up with a cracker and adds a toasty crunch against the smooth, creamy interior.
Kitchen Tips
- Chill the finished cheese ball for at least an hour before serving. It firms up and holds its shape better, making it easier to spread on crackers.
- Shape with damp hands to prevent sticking.
- Pull it from the fridge about 15 minutes before guests arrive. Slightly softened cheese ball spreads more easily and has better flavor than one straight from the cold.
Variations
- Use pecans or walnuts for a richer, earthier nut coating.
- Roll in everything bagel seasoning instead of nuts for a trendy, savory twist.
- Mix in a tablespoon of Dijon mustard for a tangy kick that pairs well with the smoked ham.
