A no-cook frozen fruit cup that turns chunky applesauce, strawberries, mandarin oranges, and grapes into a healthy frozen treat. Great for hot days, kid lunchboxes, or as a lighter dessert for adults trying to skip the ice cream.

The orange juice concentrate is the key ingredient. It adds bright citrus flavor, natural sugar, and a touch of color, but more importantly its high sugar concentration prevents the fruit cup from freezing rock-hard. The result freezes to a slushy, scoopable consistency instead of a solid brick.

Combining chunky applesauce with whole fruit pieces gives the cups two textures in one. The applesauce freezes around the fruit like a bound matrix, holding the strawberries, oranges, and grapes in place while still feeling soft.

The 30-minute thaw on the counter before serving matters for the texture to be right. Straight from the freezer the cups are too hard to spoon; given a half-hour, they soften into a slush that’s still cold but eatable.

Use individual cups (paper baking cups or small dishes) so each portion can be pulled and thawed separately. Big batches frozen in one container have to be broken apart, which destroys the texture.

Kitchen Tips

  • Drain the mandarin oranges thoroughly. Excess juice waters down the applesauce base and makes the cups looser when thawed.
  • Halve the grapes (especially for kids under 4) for safety.
  • Use freshly thawed frozen strawberries, not fresh. The freezing process breaks down the cell walls and makes them blend into the applesauce more naturally.
  • Cover the cups with plastic wrap or lids before freezing to prevent freezer burn during long storage.

Variations

  • Swap the strawberries for chopped peaches or blueberries depending on what’s in season or in the freezer.
  • Stir in a few mini chocolate chips for kids who need a little sweetness boost.
  • Add a tablespoon of plain Greek yogurt for a creamier, slightly tangy version that adds protein.
