Fresh bananas and Bartlett pears drizzled with melted vanilla ice cream as a ready-made custard sauce, topped with chopped pecans. No cooking, no custard-making. The ice cream is the sauce.

Here’s the clever trick: melted vanilla ice cream is the sauce. A quart of vanilla ice cream left to melt down becomes a ready-made vanilla custard that pours over sliced bananas and chunked pears like a rich, creamy dessert sauce. No cooking, no tempering eggs, no standing over a double boiler.

Bartlett pears are the right choice because they’re buttery soft when ripe and hold their shape in chunks without turning mushy. Paired with banana slices, you get two textures of fruit that both play well with the sweet vanilla.

Chopped pecans on top add the crunch that every fruit dessert needs. That contrast of creamy sauce, soft fruit, and crunchy nuts in every spoonful is what makes this work.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use ripe but firm Bartlett pears. Overripe pears will turn to mush when mixed
  • Let the ice cream melt at room temperature rather than microwaving. Microwaving can separate the fat and make it greasy
  • Slice the bananas right before serving so they don’t brown. A squeeze of lemon juice helps if you need to prep ahead
  • Use a high-quality vanilla ice cream. Since it’s the sauce, the flavor needs to be rich and real

Variations

  • Swap pears for fresh peaches or strawberries in summer
  • Use toasted walnuts or sliced almonds instead of pecans
  • Drizzle with a little caramel sauce or chocolate syrup alongside the melted ice cream
