No-bake chocolate dream pie with instant chocolate pudding and whipped topping in a pie shell. A light, mousse-like frozen chocolate pie that sets in the fridge.

Four ingredients beaten together and spooned into a pie shell. That’s it. Two packages of instant chocolate pudding whipped with milk and whipped topping mix create a filling that’s lighter and airier than a standard pudding pie, closer to chocolate mousse than dense custard.

The trick is whipping the topping mix first, then adding the milk and pudding to the same bowl. The already-whipped topping aerates the pudding as it sets, so the final texture is fluffy rather than heavy. Beating at high speed for a full 2 minutes incorporates enough air to make each slice feel surprisingly light for something so chocolatey.

Four hours of chilling gives the filling time to set firm enough to slice cleanly. Rush it and you’ll get a puddle on the plate instead of a wedge.

Kitchen Tips

  • Use cold milk straight from the fridge. Cold milk activates the instant pudding faster and helps the whipped topping hold its structure.
  • Scrape the sides of the bowl while beating as the recipe says. Unmixed pockets of dry pudding powder end up as gritty spots in the finished pie.
  • Use a pre-baked pie shell that’s completely cooled. A warm shell will start melting the filling from the bottom up.
  • For the cleanest slices, dip your knife in hot water between cuts.

Variations

  • Top with additional whipped cream and chocolate shavings before serving for a bakery-style presentation.
  • Use a chocolate cookie crust instead of a standard pie shell for a double-chocolate version.
  • Swap one package of chocolate pudding for vanilla to make a marbled chocolate-vanilla dream pie. Spoon them in alternating layers and swirl with a knife.
