Chocolate almond coffee, a homemade flavored coffee blend with ground coffee, chocolate and almond extracts, and freshly grated nutmeg. Brew like regular coffee for a cafe-style drink at home.

This is a flavored coffee blend you make in 5 minutes that costs a fraction of what cafes charge for their bottled syrups and infused beans. The combination of chocolate extract, almond extract, and freshly grated nutmeg transforms regular ground coffee into something that smells like dessert before it even hits the brewer.

Use a quality medium-roast ground coffee as the base. Light roasts get overwhelmed by the extracts; dark roasts mute them. Medium roast holds up to the flavoring while staying recognizable as coffee.

Fresh nutmeg is non-negotiable. Pre-ground nutmeg loses its warm, woody character within weeks of being opened. Grate it fresh from a whole nut directly into the blender; the difference is night and day.

The brief processing in a blender or food processor is what lets the extracts bond to the coffee grounds. Without it, you’d have liquid extracts pooling at the bottom and dry grounds on top. Ten seconds is enough; longer and the friction heats the grounds and dulls the aromatics.

Store the flavored blend in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Cold storage preserves both the coffee and the extracts, keeping the blend fresh for two to three weeks.

Brew exactly like regular coffee. Adding chopped toasted almonds to the cup gives a textural bonus.

Pro Tips

  • Use a real chocolate extract (alcohol-based, not artificial); it makes a real flavor difference.
  • Toast almonds in a dry skillet for 5 minutes before chopping for nuttier depth.
  • A dusting of cocoa powder on the foam mimics a mocha topper.
  • Brew slightly stronger than normal; the extracts dilute the coffee profile.

Variations

  • Swap almond extract for hazelnut extract for chocolate-hazelnut coffee.
  • Add a half teaspoon of cinnamon for a Mexican mocha twist.
  • Stir in a splash of Amaretto or Bailey’s for an adult version.
