60 minThis is the real deal fortune cookie recipe that actually tastes like the ones from Chinese restaurants, not the simplified versions floating around the internet.
The secret ingredient? Instant tea powder, which gives these that subtle golden color and hint of complexity you recognize from takeout. The batter gets chilled for 30 minutes before baking, which helps the cookies spread evenly and develop that signature crisp texture.
You’ll need cotton gloves or thick paper towels to protect your fingers while folding the hot cookies. They come out of the oven scorching hot but only stay pliable for about 30 seconds, so speed matters. The detailed process includes using muffin tins to hold the shaped cookies while they cool and set.
Makes 3 dozen cookies, perfect for parties or gift-giving. The effort pays off when you bite into that perfectly crispy, delicately sweet cookie.
