1 hrsPart dessert, part art project, and 100% guaranteed to make kids lose their minds at a birthday party.
Each clown starts with a cupcake flipped upside down as the base. A scoop of vanilla ice cream goes on top for the head, a sugar cone perches on as the pointy hat, and whipped cream gets sprayed around the bottom for a ruffled collar. Candy pieces become the eyes, nose, and mouth.
The recipe makes 24 cupcakes from a box mix, but you only need 12 for the clowns. Freeze the rest for another day.
Pro Tips
- Pre-scoop the ice cream balls onto a baking sheet and freeze them solid before assembly. Trying to scoop and build at the same time turns into a melty mess.
- Work fast once the ice cream comes out of the freezer. Assemble two or three clowns at a time, then pop them back in the freezer while you do the next batch.
- Let the kids decorate their own faces with the candy pieces. It’s half the fun and keeps them busy while you clean up.
- Use small round candies like M&Ms or gumdrops for features that stick well to the ice cream.
