Ingredients

2 cups flour, all-purpose
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves ground
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
1/2 cup sour milk
3 tablespoons sugar syrup burned, see note
2 large eggs
1/2 cup sourdough starter

Directions

Sift together first 7 ingredients.

Add next 5 ingredients.

Beat 3 minutes with electric mixer.

Fold In: 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts and 1/2 cup golden seedless raisins.

Bake in a greased and floured 13 x 9 1/2 inch pan for 35-40 min at 350 F.

NOTE: Burnt sugar syrup-- put 1/2 cup granulated sugar in a small skillet and stir over medium high heat until melted and quite dark.

Remove from heat, add 1/4 cup water, and stir in well, but BE CAREFUL as the syrup splatters when water is added.

Janice: Your water and vinegar measurements must be off. Can you double check and correct? 3 ts of liquid could not possibly process 8 bussels of maters. Other than that, I'd like to try the recipe. Thanx! Arlene
