60 minThis cake sneaks applesauce into a classic chocolate fudge base, adding moisture and a subtle fruity undertone that makes the chocolate taste even deeper. You’ll cook chocolate with milk and sugar until thick, then cool it before folding in the applesauce.
The batter comes together with a standard creaming method, alternating dry ingredients and milk into the butter and sugar, then blending in that cooled chocolate mixture.
Bake two layers, let them cool completely, then split each one horizontally to create four thin layers. Stack them high with apple fluff or apple cream frosting between each layer.
Baker’s Tips
- Cool the chocolate mixture completely before adding to prevent curdling
- Use canned applesauce for consistent moisture
- Split cooled layers carefully with a serrated knife for even layers
- Chill the assembled cake before frosting for easiest handling
