This vintage gem earned its name from the ingredient count, not complexity.

One cup butter, two cups sugar, three cups flour, four eggs, five teaspoons baking powder: those simple ratios deliver a golden-crumbed cake with buttery richness and just enough vanilla to make your kitchen smell like a bakery.

It’s the kind of recipe grandmothers taught by heart, perfect for birthdays, potlucks, or any Tuesday that needs sweetening up.

Kitchen Tips

  • Room temperature ingredients blend smoother and create better texture, so pull eggs and butter from the fridge 30 minutes early
  • Fold the flour gently to avoid tough crumb from overmixing
  • Test doneness with the bounce-back method: lightly press the center and it should spring back when ready
