Quick loaf bread made with Bisquick, candied fruit, walnuts, and a hint of anise. Mix, pour, bake. A retro holiday bread that couldn’t be simpler.

75 minThis throwback quick bread looks like a stained glass window when you slice it, all those jewel-toned bits of candied fruit peeking through a nutty, anise-scented crumb.
Bisquick does the heavy lifting here, so there’s no measuring out flour, baking powder, or salt separately.
Just mix the batter, fold in the fruit and chopped walnuts or pecans, and pour it into a loaf pan.
The crack down the top is totally normal and actually gives it that rustic, homemade charm.
Kitchen Tips
- Use good quality candied fruit. The cheap stuff from the grocery store baking aisle can taste waxy. Look for brands that use real fruit and less artificial color.
- Star anise gives this bread its signature warmth. If you only have anise extract, use about ¼ teaspoon instead.
- Cool completely before slicing or the bread will crumble. Wrap it in foil overnight and the flavors really come together.

This is easy and very good. Just make sure it is cool before slicing, otherwise the slice will break up
