1 hrsOnce your Friendship Bread starter has worked its 10-day magic, this apple-studded version is one of the best ways to use it.
The tangy starter gets mixed with eggs, oil, and vanilla, then folded with chopped apples and nuts before being divided between two loaf pans. Cinnamon runs throughout, making the whole house smell like an Amish bakery as it bakes. The apples keep it incredibly moist, and the starter adds a subtle tang that balances the sweetness.
Bake one loaf to enjoy now and freeze the other for later, or wrap both up to share with the friend who gave you the starter in the first place.
Kitchen Tips
- Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor contrast
- Chop apples small so they distribute evenly throughout the batter
- Don’t overmix once you add the dry ingredients or the bread will be tough
- Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning out to prevent crumbling
