40 minOnce you make your own taco seasoning from scratch, those little foil packets at the grocery store start to seem like a scam.
This stripped-down recipe is about as simple as it gets: brown lean ground beef, add water and your own blend of taco spices, and simmer for 10 minutes until the liquid cooks down into a saucy, well-seasoned filling.
No mystery ingredients, no preservatives, no hidden MSG. Just beef and spices you chose.
It fills 8 to 10 taco shells, works just as well in burritos or over nachos, and freezes like a champ for future taco emergencies.
Kitchen Tips
- Make a big batch of homemade seasoning. Mix up a jar of your custom taco spice blend and keep it in the pantry. Then this recipe is literally a 3-ingredient dinner.
- Don’t skip the water. It might seem odd, but simmering the beef in seasoned water is what distributes the spices evenly and creates that saucy consistency you know from taco joints.
- Drain the beef before adding water. Getting the excess grease out first means a cleaner-tasting filling that lets the spices shine.
