Halloween gag cookies rolled in Grape-Nuts and served from a clean litter box with a scoop. Chocolate and gingerbread dough logs shaped like, well, you know. Harmless fun.

A party trick cookie for Halloween, gross-out-themed birthdays, or anyone whose sense of humor runs shameless. Two whole-wheat doughs (one chocolate, one spiced gingerbread) get rolled into uneven logs, coated in Grape-Nuts cereal, and baked up looking exactly as advertised.

The trick is in the shaping. Logs should vary in diameter, length, and curve. Uniform cookies break the illusion. Chill the dough hard before rolling so it holds shape without smearing in your hands, then press handfuls of Grape-Nuts onto the outside for that gravelly texture that reads perfectly across a crowded room.

Underneath the visual prank, these are legitimate cookies. Whole wheat flour and honey give the chocolate version a hearty, almost granola-bar chew. The gingerbread dough leans on molasses, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves for that warming holiday-spice profile. Customize each batch with mix-ins (chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, butterscotch chips, coconut) before shaping.

Serve them out of a brand-new, unused cat litter box, scattered over a bed of fresh Grape-Nuts, with a clean plastic scoop. Half your guests will laugh. The other half won’t touch them. Both reactions are correct.

Kitchen Tips

  • Freeze the dough 1 hour before shaping. Refrigerator chilling works too, but the freezer is faster and firmer.
  • Gently press the Grape-Nuts into the dough rather than rolling. Rolling crushes the cereal into dust.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) until the cookies feel firm but not hard. 10 to 15 minutes depending on log thickness.
  • Only serve from a brand-new, still-in-plastic litter box. This seems obvious and also it isn’t.

Variations

  • Skip the presentation and serve as regular chocolate or gingerbread drop cookies.
  • Use peppermint extract in place of vanilla for a holiday-version chocolate batch.
  • Halve each dough recipe if you only need one variety.
