A simple bread-machine peanut butter bread that turns the everyday sandwich pantry inside out: instead of spreading peanut butter on bread, you bake the peanut butter into the dough itself. The peanut butter does double work, providing fat for tender crumb and a subtle nutty flavor that’s surprisingly grown-up rather than peanut-cookie sweet.

Use smooth, regular peanut butter (the supermarket kind), not natural-style. Natural peanut butter separates and the oil ratio throws off bread machine doughs. Smooth processed peanut butter blends evenly and behaves predictably during the kneading cycle.

The brown sugar plays well against the peanut butter, deepening the flavor without making the loaf cake-sweet. Use light or dark brown; either works, with dark giving a more molasses-tinged finish.

Kitchen Tips

  • Add ingredients in the order your machine recommends; usually liquids first, then dry, yeast last.
  • Bring the peanut butter to room temperature first; cold peanut butter doesn’t blend evenly.
  • Use the basic or sandwich cycle for tender crumb.
  • Cool fully on a rack before slicing; warm peanut butter bread tears under the knife.
