Monkey-faced cookies: old-fashioned molasses drop cookies with ginger and cinnamon, decorated with three raisins for eyes and a mouth. Makes 36 cookies in 30 minutes. A classic kids baking project.

These are old-fashioned molasses drop cookies with a warm spice backbone of cinnamon and ginger, made tangy with sour milk and a teaspoon of vinegar in the dough. Each one gets three raisins or bits of citron pressed on before baking to make the eyes and mouth. At 36 cookies a batch, there are plenty to go around.
“Sour milk” in old recipes means slightly acidic milk. A tablespoon of vinegar stirred into regular milk and left to sit for a few minutes does the same job.
Ingredients
Directions
Cream together shortening and brown sugar.
Sift together flour, soda, salt, ginger and cinnamon.
Add alternately with molasses mixed with sour milk.
Blend in vinegar.
Drop by teaspoon on greased baking sheet.
Place 3 raisins or bits of citron on each for eyes and mouth.
Bake 10 to 15 minutes in moderate oven (350℉/180℃).
