Easy Bread Machine Irish Soda Bread
Submitted by mark
Easy bread machine Irish soda bread: just six ingredients dumped into the machine, press start, and walk away. Sour milk and a little baking soda give it that classic tangy soda-bread flavor and a soft, tender crumb.

1 hrsThis might be the easiest bread you ever bake: measure six ingredients into the bread machine, press start, and let the machine do everything from mixing to baking. No kneading, no shaping, no babysitting a rising bowl.
It’s a clever hybrid take on Irish soda bread. Sour milk and baking soda give it the tangy flavor and tender crumb that define a soda bread, while a packet of yeast adds extra lift, so the loaf comes out lighter and softer than a dense traditional one.
The sour milk pulls double duty here. Its acidity reacts with the baking soda for tenderness and tang, and it adds moisture that keeps the crumb soft for days.
The result is an everyday loaf that’s wonderful warm with butter, toasted for breakfast, or sliced for sandwiches. It’s the kind of fuss-free recipe you come back to again and again.
Kitchen Tips
- Add the ingredients in the order your bread machine recommends, usually liquids first, then dry, with the yeast last and kept away from the liquid until mixing starts.
- No sour milk? Stir a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar into regular milk and let it sit five minutes to curdle.
- Use the basic or white bread cycle, and let the loaf cool before slicing so the crumb fully sets.
Variations
- Stir in a handful of raisins or currants for a traditional spotted soda bread.
- Add a teaspoon of caraway seeds for classic Irish-American flavor.
- Use part whole wheat flour for a heartier, nuttier loaf.

Tried this recipe last week. It actually turned out very good and tasted delicious.
The Irish don't use yeast in soda bread

Thank you!!! This is what I know as well and yet I'm having trouble finding a traditional Irish Soda bread without yeast in it!
Can currents and caraway seeds be added? And if so when?
Yes, you can certainly add currents and caraway seeds, and add them to the rest of the ingredients at the beginning. Then put the mixture into the bread machine, press the start button. Hope this helps. Happy Baking :)
I loved this recipe, so simple, YET so perfect, my soda bread is fantastic, never made it before, just ate it. I say I rank in the top (1000). Thanks

Can I use buttermilk instead
Just came back from Ireland, spent 3 days at a wonderful B&B where fresh bread, with different seasonings, is made every morning in bread maker. Their recipe contains yeast but has the same crumbly texture as traditional Irish bread.
Can I add Guinness to this recipe?
Is it a basic bread or quick bread setting on a bread machine?
Thanks!
How much yeast is in a sachet
Hm (big doubt)...: when you know how fast (2 or 3 minutes !) it takes to mix the ingredients just with a knife or hands, I really don't see the interest of using a bread machine (and having to wash it afterwards).
And above all, in addition to this : the Irish soda bread dough has to be VERY FEW kneaded : once the ingredients mixed in a bowl, you just "work" them about 30 seconds. Overwork makes the gluten be very present, then the consistency of the bread is not at all the Irish one.
The bread machine kneads the bread much too long. And the time tou ohave to wait for, to get your bread cooked, is also very long, wben in the oven you just wait 50 minutes !
So really, where is the advantage of using the bread machine for this fabulous and so quick and easy bread to to by hand (and not to mention the pleasure of "feeling" the dough into your hands...).
So... better go and see the (numerous) recipes of Irish soda bread WITHOUT bread machine (Gemma Stafford, Trish Deseire...) :-)

I'm sorry for the typing (and grammar) errors I left in my message. As I currently don't see it, I can't remember if I talked about ther kneading process time : it has to be 10 seconds maximum (I maybe typed 30). So, you see what a nonsense is using a bread machine, even on "quick position" to make such a bread !...
