Three ounces of Bailey’s Irish Cream in the bottom of a mug, hot black coffee poured over top, a spray of whipped topping, and a dusting of nutmeg. Four ingredients, zero effort, and you’ve got a warm, boozy coffee drink that beats anything from a chain cafe.

The ratio here is generous: three ounces of Irish cream liqueur to five ounces of coffee means the cream flavor comes through strong. The hot coffee warms the liqueur and releases its vanilla and cocoa notes, filling the mug with a sweet, toasty aroma before you even take a sip.

Use strong, freshly brewed black coffee. Weak coffee gets lost under the sweetness of the liqueur and you’ll taste nothing but Bailey’s. A dark roast or espresso gives you the bitter backbone this drink needs to stay balanced.

The nutmeg on top isn’t just decorative. Even a tiny dash adds a warm, slightly spicy fragrance that hits your nose with every sip. Freshly grated nutmeg from a whole seed is noticeably better than pre-ground, but either works in a pinch.

Kitchen Tips

  • Warm the mug with hot water before building the drink. A cold mug drops the temperature fast, especially with the liqueur sitting cold at the bottom.
  • A single spray of whipped topping is enough. Too much insulates the coffee and prevents the nutmeg aroma from reaching you.
  • Stir gently before drinking if you prefer an evenly mixed drink, or leave it layered so each sip changes as you go.

Variations

  • Mocha version: Add a tablespoon of chocolate syrup to the mug before pouring the coffee for a richer, chocolatey drink.
  • Non-alcoholic: Use an Irish cream-flavored coffee creamer in place of the liqueur for the flavor without the booze.
