Hi - I went to use an old vanilla bean that I had in the cabinet and it was still fairly supple, but when I scraped out the bean it clumped together no matter how much I mixed it and had almost no vanilla smell. This bean was kept in an airtight glass canister, so I assumed it was ok to use. Since it didn't seem right though, I tossed it and never did make my pie. Could you tell me just how long one can be kept fresh to use? Thank You - Jeanne
